  Overview

As a professional bricklayer, you lay the foundations for all other trades to follow. It is a great job for staying fit and healthy and if you have an eye for detail and good work ethic you can be earning fantastic money anywhere in the world with our official City and Guilds qualification. Many site managers have a bricklaying background so this is a great first step if you want to move into Higher Education later on. Brickwork is not just about sand and cement – it is about design and creativity – so come and express yourself at Bradford College.

  Key Info

At Level 1, you will learn how to construct walls and structures using blocks and bricks – how to measure and mark out for new buildings and how to repair damaged walls. Builders in Bradford are always on the look out for apprentices and we are their number one choice when they need someone new to join their team. You can progress to Level 2 and Level 3 and learn more about stonemasonary, dry stone walling and heritage works – all of which are skills in high demand in West Yorkshire.

Qualification Gained: City and Guilds of London Institute Extended Certificate in Construction Skills

Entry to this course requires GCSE Maths and English at a grade 2. Please note that you will be required to wear safety boots with steel toe caps and hi-vis vest when working in the College workshops. Prior to enrolment on the course, please make sure you have access to these resources.

You will show your skills in the brick workshop – building models that start off easy, and get more and more technical. When you are ready, you will be a key player in the construction projects we run with employers that simulate a real-life construction site. This gives you the opportunity to impress the employers we bring into college with your brickwork skills and gets you closer to earning as you learn as an apprentice.

Your course may include work experience or a work placement that could lead to the offer of a part-time or casual work, or you might work outside of your studies. Our students benefit from local site visits and trips to construction companies, such as our award-winning local partner Priestley Construction.

Successful completion of your course can lead to further study to Level 2 and Level 3 courses, as well as apprenticeships and employment. Our students have gone on to run their own building companies, won national brickwork competitions and progressed to Higher Education. A carpenter/joiner/builder has the potential to earn anywhere between £12K and £40K per year. Working in the construction industry could see you constructing and managing major buildings, structures and facilities. Career opportunities are available through large construction contractors and smaller specialist employers in the public and private sectors.
