About the Artist

In 1957 when Janet began her Art School training at Manchester Regional College of Art, direct observation and perspective were key parts of the syllabus.

Her early influences were Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland and Edward Middleditch, and later, Max Beckman.

Janet graduated with a distinction in Post Graduate Printmaking in 1962, and later went on to complete her MA in Fine Art at Leeds in 2003. She had several solo shows in Manchester, Leeds and Belgium, and was a regular exhibitor with Leeds Fine Artists group. In 1986 she won 1st Prize in the South Yorkshire Open at the Cooper Art Gallery, Barnsley, and in 1991 exhibited at the 5th International Print Biennale, Taiwan.

Her career was initially constrained by an early mental health diagnosis.  She was partially stabilised by marriage and motherhood and began to paint in earnest on a daily basis, improvising compositions from her sketchbooks – she drew endlessly on trains and buses, in cafes and in the street.

Janet’s paintings were exhibited by various galleries, leading to sales and work in private collections in Europe, with particular success in Belgium.
