Our highly qualified teachers will enable you to achieve a qualification in ESOL Skills for Life at an appropriate level and you will have the opportunity to progress to either our vocational or academic courses in the future. Your ESOL course will be five to six hours a week, depending on which skills you are developing. You will develop the confidence to communicate effectively in your local community and will engage with other learners from different backgrounds and cultures. All our classes include skills (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) and Language (Grammar and Vocabulary). Classes are delivered at four different levels from Entry Level 1 (Beginner) to Level 1 (Intermediate). The skills and language used in each class will depend on the level of the class. You will learn about life in the UK (Citizenship). Topics include: History, Geography, Law, Government, Celebrations, Health, Housing, Work and many others. You will study in regular classes with other students at the same level. You will work as a class, in groups, in pairs and on your own. ENTRY LEVEL 1: This is for learners who have some language skills and want to gain a certificate in Speaking and Listening. It may be possible to complete the full qualification (Reading and Writing) if you make enough progress during the year. Your tutor will help you develop the skills required to work towards examinations. You will gain a City and Guilds Certificate in Speaking and Listening at Entry Level 1 (or full qualification at Entry Level 1)
Qualification Gained: City and Guilds of London Institute Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life (Entry 1)
There are no specific entry requirements however, you must have an awareness of the alphabet and forming letters. You must visit the College to take a short English test and have an interview with an English teacher. Please note that taking a test and having an interview does not guarantee an immediate place in an ESOL class. You may have to wait until a place becomes available or a new course starts. At the start of your course, your tutor will give you a course handbook that you will need to keep with you for the duration of your course.
Your tutor will assess you and there will be mock examinations to ensure you are ready to take this examination.
