  Overview

Our Level 1 course in Carpentry and Joinery is the perfect preparation for getting an apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery. Whether you are wanting to get a job on construction sites doing working on house building e.g. roofing work, we will teach you the fundamental skills needed to progress to an apprenticeship.

  Key Info

Our official City and Guilds courses will set you on the right path to becoming a fully qualified joiner. Different woods do different jobs and the way you have to work with them to get the perfect finish is a real skill. Our teachers are all industry experts, with years of experience and they are ready to share their tips and tricks with you! We have great relationships with some of the biggest joinery companies in Bradford and our joinery work experience programme is second to none.

Qualification Gained: City and Guilds of London Institute Certificate in Construction Skills

Entry to this course requires GCSE English and Maths at a grade 2 or E. Please note that before you start this course you will need to purchase safety boots with steel toe caps and hi-vis vest as these are required when working in the College workshops.

Joiners are fairly unique in that they are often there at the start of a construction project – and at the end too. This means that on top of your wood working skills, you also need to be good at project management and co-ordinating people. Many site managers have a joinery background so we make sure that we give you opportunities to develop your leadership skills and prepare you for higher education and a career in professional construction. You will be assessed by the successfully completion of an assignment for each mandatory unit and in the well-equipped workshop for the practical assessments.

You will be learning your skills in the workshop before applying them on our college construction site. We have set up a simulated building site on our construction campus so you can get a real flavour of working life on-site! Our students benefit from local site visits and trips to construction companies, such as our award-winning local partner Priestley Construction.

Successful completion of a Level 1 course can lead onto Level 2 and 3 courses. Your course may include work experience or a work placement that could lead to the offer of a part-time or casual work, or you might work outside of your studies. A carpenter/joiner has the potential to earn anywhere between £12K and £40K per year. Working in the construction industry could see you constructing and managing major buildings, structures and facilities. Career opportunities are available through large construction contractors and smaller specialist employers in the public and private sectors. You could also train to become your own boss and become self-employed.

This is representative of the most common fees scenario, but actual fees can vary depending on a number of factors. Please contact us if you need more guidance.
