7 Ways to Settle in at Bradford College: A Guide for New Students

Your guide to thriving during your first few weeks at College

Starting college is an exciting, yet sometimes overwhelming experience. You’re stepping into a whole new world of opportunities, new friends, and challenges—and it’s normal to feel a bit nervous. The good news is that we are here to guide you through every step of the way.

Here are our 7 tips to help you settle in and make the most of your time at Bradford College:

1. Get comfortable in the first week

Your first week at college is all about settling in. You’ll be introduced to everything from safeguarding and wellbeing services to the College’s core values. Make sure you wear your college lanyard around your neck at all times – it’s your ticket to everything on campus, and you’ll need it every day. Plus, be sure to check out resources like the free breakfast club and other financial support options.

2. Dive into activities

Whether you’re into sports, board games, or creative arts, there’s an extracurricular activity for you. The Bradford College Students’ Union (BCSU) main goal is to ensure all students can engage in some personal development through organising clubs, activities and campaigns. Joining a club or society is a great way to meet new people and feel more connected.

3. Meet our Careers & Work Experience Team

As you settle into college, you’ll also get the chance to meet the Careers and Work Experience team in week three. They’re here to help you think ahead to life after college, offering advice on CV writing, interview skills and career development. They explain how you can record all your valuable work experience whilst you’re with us, ready for your CV.

4. Make the most of your Library and Study Resources

Whether you’re looking for course materials, want to learn a new skill, or just love to read, our libraries are here to help. Our libraries offer free access to physical and online resources. With locations at both the David Hockney and Trinity Green campuses both libraries have individual and group study spaces, private pods, computers, printers and you can borrow up to 15 books at a time.

5. Master time management and study skills

Staying organised and managing your time can make a huge difference at College. If you ever need help, our friendly library staff and Academic Skills Coaches are always available. They can assist with improving your academic writing, time management and exam preparation skills.

6. Make every day count

Being on time and attending your classes regularly are the key to succeeding in College. By staying engaged both in and out of the classroom, you’ll build habits that not only help you now but will benefit you throughout your future. This means you also won’t miss out on important lessons or opportunities!

7. Give it time

The first few weeks might feel overwhelming, and that’s perfectly normal. College is a big step, and it takes time to adjust. Remember, everyone else is feeling the same way, even if they don’t show it. Be kind to yourself—you’ve got this.
