Bradford College Students Gain Career Insight at Speed Mentoring Event

Bradford College recently welcomed a wide range of professional mentors to campus for a dynamic Speed Mentoring event designed to provide students with direct access to career insights, industry knowledge, and valuable guidance for their future aspirations.

The format of the event was fast-paced and engaging, with students participating in a series of timed, one-on-one conversations with mentors from various professional backgrounds. Each session lasted 15 minutes, after which students rotated to speak with a new mentor. This structure allowed students to engage in multiple meaningful conversations within a short period, broadening their exposure to different industries, career paths, and lived experiences.

In preparation for the event, students were encouraged to identify key topics they wished to discuss. This included career planning, industry expectations, workplace culture, employability skills, and personal development strategies. With these focus areas in mind, students were able to lead insightful discussions, ask purposeful questions, and reflect on how the mentors’ experiences could inform their own decisions.

The mentors who are professionals from sectors including business, health, education, technology, and the creative industries, generously shared stories about their journeys, the choices they made, and the challenges they overcame, including the unexpected twists and pivotal decisions that shaped their paths. Their openness provided students with a realistic view of the world of work, as well as encouragement to embrace both ambition and resilience. For many students, this honest and open dialogue helped demystify the world of work and highlighted the importance of both planning and adaptability.

This exchange of knowledge and experience offered a unique opportunity for students to learn directly from those working in their fields of interest. It also helped build confidence and communication skills, as students practiced articulating their interests, asking thoughtful questions, and reflecting on their goals.

Alina Khan, Vice Principal of EDI who has organised the event said “Our recent speed mentoring event was a huge success! Students described it as like having over two years’ worth of careers guidance in just two hours, and said it boosted their confidence in speaking with industry professionals. Once new arrival to our college community shared how the experience helped them communicate more comfortably with people they’d never normally meet. Our mentors were equally inspired, saying the session gave them valuable insight into the challenges faced by their future workforce – helping them better understand and support the next generation of employees.”

This was thoroughly enjoyable and informative session and our students said “It was like getting a year’s worth of career advice in one afternoon.”, “It was very interesting getting to meet different people. The main thing is not to give up and keep going”

Bradford College would like to thank all of the mentors who took the time to take part in this event. Their insight, guidance, and generosity will have a lasting impact on our students as they take their next steps beyond education.

The College looks forward to hosting more events that connect learners with professionals and provide real-world preparation for life after college.
