Bradford College Wins UK’s Biggest Sustainability Competition in Further Education
7 monthsBradford College recently triumphed in this year’s Planet Earth Games – the biggest sustainability competition for the UK Further Education sector.
At a time when climate change and the environment continue to make headlines globally, the role of Further Education colleges to promote sustainability has never been more critical. Organisations like ourselves at Bradford College are ideally positioned to influence the next generation and foster a culture that extends beyond the classroom into the wider community.
Earlier this year we were crowned Planet Earth Games champions and just recently have received a £2.6m grant for energy-efficiency works; a culture of sustainability is strengthening across the College.
As we strive to play our part by hitting various sustainability goals and priorities, here’s why you should care…
One of the most obvious but still pivotal reasons to care is our responsibility to preserve the planet for future generations. By caring for the environment now, we can directly ensure a happier future for both ourselves and generations to come.
‘Sustainable practices help us leave things in a better shape than we found them’
Living sustainably can directly impact health. Practices often lead to cleaner air, water, and soil, potentially reducing the chances of health problems associated with pollution and environmental decline.
Additionally, sustainability often encourages a more balanced lifestyle that includes positives like healthy eating, physical activity, and mental wellbeing.
The job market is increasingly valuing sustainability skills and many employers are looking for people who understand the area. Organisations across various sectors are often seeking individuals who can contribute to sustainability goals and help comply with certain regulations.
By embracing sustainability and getting involved in important initiatives, you can literally enhance your employability and gain skills that are in high demand. It’s a great way to stand out.
Sustainable practices can contribute to an improved College environment. This can be little actions as simple as using less paper, recycling, and saving energy to make campuses cleaner and more pleasant places to be.
All of us benefit from greener, healthier spaces.
When we work together on mutually-beneficial initiatives, it naturally fosters teamwork, collaboration, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact. As seen with our Planet Earth Games triumph, this sort of collective effort can strengthen the sense of belonging and purpose within an institution. Outside of the College buildings, caring about sustainability can encourage a mindset of ethical responsibility and stewardship, hopefully influencing families, friends, and broader communities.
Sustainability is not just a buzzword but a way of life that benefits us all. Through understanding and making smart choices, we can all have a positive effect within Bradford College and far beyond.
