Women in STEM: Why a Technology Career is the Perfect Choice

When you think of a career in tech, what comes to mind? For many people, it’s images of coding gurus, hardware engineers, or IT experts hunched over computer screens. The reality? The world of IT is more dynamic, inclusive, and exciting than ever before – and calling you to be a part of it!

If you’re a girl trying to decide if a future in IT or technology is right for you, you may be wondering if it’s a field that suits your interests, skills, and goals. Here are some of our key reasons why it could be the perfect fit.

Endless Growth Opportunities

Technology isn’t disappearing any time soon; in fact, it continues to grow. From cloud computing and data analysis to AI and cybersecurity, there are countless pathways available within IT. Whether you want to work on software development, help organisations secure their networks, or design systems that change the way people live, the possibilities are endless.

The demand for tech jobs is also projected to grow much faster than various other industries. By stepping into the world of IT, you would be entering a field with job security and long-term prospects. Many roles in technology don’t require a traditional computer science degree, but instead offer opportunities to learn through boot camps, online courses, and hands-on experience. This flexibility makes it easier to break into the field no matter where you start from.

You Don’t Have to Be a ‘Tech Genius’

One common misconception about IT careers is that you need to be an expert in programming or maths to succeed.

While technical skills are important, the tech industry also needs general problem-solvers, communicators, project managers, and creative thinkers. In fact, a lot of the most successful people in IT are not only highly-skilled in technical areas, but also excel in teamwork, collaboration, and leadership.

“My IT journey started when I was 14. I was fascinated when I could take an algebra equation and programme it. We need a diverse workforce in IT as with diversity comes different ideas and solutions, which is important for the many customers and clients with different needs. Women need to be empowered; if you have a logical mind and have tackled these things at school, go for it. Believe in yourself!”

Dr Kulvinder Panesar – Assistant Professor of Applied Artificial Intelligence, University of Bradford

Make a Real Impact

Technology has the potential to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. From developing apps that help people connect during a pandemic, to building systems that improve healthcare or education, the industry allows people to be part of innovation that impacts millions of lives.

If you’re someone who wants to contribute to positive change, an IT career offers you a platform to do just this.

High Earning Potential

Let’s face it, many of us consider potential salaries when choosing a career. Jobs in tech tend to come with competitive salaries, and many roles offer opportunities for advancement that lead to even higher pay.

For example, starting salaries in IT could be anything from £30,000 up to £78,000 for an IT Business Analyst (Lightcast).

The IT sector tends to also offer benefits like flexible work schedules, remote work options, and generous perks, offering an attractive choice to potential talent. This sort of financial security can give the independence to pursue your passions, whether that be travel, hobbies, or saving for future goals.

Break Down Barriers

Organisations and initiatives such as Girls Who Code, Women Who Tech, and SheCodes continue to create powerful networks and communities designed to support women entering the industry.

Many companies highly value diversity and inclusion, with programs specifically designed to recruit and retain women in IT roles. This means that women and girls in tech are now needed, valued, and celebrated more than ever.

Chance to Keep Learning

As mentioned, technology is one of the fastest-evolving industries. If you’re someone who loves to learn and isn’t afraid of change, it could be the perfect environment for you. The field is constantly evolving as new technologies, tools, and languages emerge every day.

This means you shouldn’t ever get bored or stagnate in your career. There will always be something new to explore, whether it’s mastering the latest programming language or tackling new challenges in emerging fields like AI or blockchain.

Build Your Confidence

A career in IT can certainly help with building personal confidence.

This is a field that encourages critical thinking, solving problems, and collaborating with diverse teams to create solutions. By performing skills like these, you can gain confidence in not only your tech abilities, but also your capacity to tackle challenges in other areas of life.

If you’re still wondering whether a tech career could be the right fit, the bottom line is that tech is a fast-paced and rewarding field in need of more women just like you.

Whether you’re drawn to coding, problem-solving, or just making a difference in the world, there’s a place for anyone in the industry. With so many resources, networks, and opportunities now available, you’ll never have to go it alone.
