1Energy has partnered with Bradford College, the University of Bradford, and Bradford Courts to roll out a new heat-pump-powered network for the rapid decarbonisation of heating – the country’s biggest source of carbon emissions.

Heat networks (also known as district heating) supply heat from a central source via a network of underground pipes carrying hot water. This avoids the need for individual boilers or electric heaters in every building.

A heat network is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing carbon emissions from heating. Once the network is in place, heat that otherwise goes to waste can be harnessed and used.

At Bradford College, the project will reduce flow and return temperatures within our David Hockney and ATC buildings. Supplemented by our contribution of £364k (taking the project to over £3m), works include heat network connection, emitter upgrades, insulation of pipework, and substation upgrades.

This project aims to reduce other forms of air pollution from heating by 75 per cent during its first phase. Additionally, the project will save the three key partners 29,780 tonnes of carbon dioxide – equivalent to taking over 21,360 cars off the road!

The Bradford Energy Network is laying the foundations for a net zero city, making the area an even more attractive place to invest and accelerate the growth of the local low-carbon employment sector.
