The Additional Diploma in Teaching English, ESOL and Literacy is designed for you. It equips you with a recognised Level 5 specialist qualification, empowering you to effectively teach your chosen subject within the Education and Training sector.

This course is for qualified teachers (Level 5 or equivalent) who want to teach English, ESOL or Literacy but lack specific training in these areas.  

The program will:  

  • Give you a recognised Level 5 specialist teaching qualification in English, ESOL or Literacy. 
  • Help you understand the theories behind teaching these subjects. 
  • Develop your skills and confidence to be an ambitious English, ESOL or Literacy teacher. 
  • Teach you how to be inclusive and promote equal learning for all students.

Applicants should normally have achieved the following prior to registration for the programme: 

Admissions criteria 

  • A full teaching qualification (DET or equivalent). 
  • Confirmation of teaching hours and a suitable mentor.
  • Level 3+ subject specific qualification.
  • An eligible GCSE/Level 2 Maths and English qualification or equivalency*.
  • Relevant experience/prior learning.
  • Enhanced DBS and health check, successful interview including an assessment of their language awareness of grammar, vocabulary and phonology to assess readiness for teaching English, ESOL or Literacy.
