Are you eager to learn the essential skills of carpentry and joinery?

Our Carpentry and Joinery Course is designed for beginners who want to gain a strong foundation in this versatile trade. This course provides training in the basics of carpentry and joinery and covers both theoretical and practical aspects, making sure that you are well-prepared for a successful career in the construction industry.

You will learn the fundamentals of woodworking, from basic carpentry techniques to more advanced joinery methods, and become proficient in using both hand tools and power tools. Emphasis is placed on understanding the principles behind these techniques, as well as ensuring that you follow safety standards and best practices, both in the workshop and on-site.

Entry to this course requires GCSE Maths and English Language at a grade 2.

Assessment is carried out through a series of projects set by City and Guilds.

Please note that you will be required to wear safety boots with steel toe caps and hi-vis vest when working in the College workshops. Prior to enrolment on the course, please make sure you have access to these resources.

Your course may include work experience or a work placement that could lead to the offer of a part-time or casual work, or you might work outside of your studies. You will be learning your skills in the workshop before applying them on our college construction site.

We have set up a simulated building site on our construction campus so you can get a real flavour of working life on-site. We make sure that we give you opportunities to develop your leadership skills and prepare you for Higher Education and a career in professional construction.

Our students benefit from local site visits and trips to construction companies, such as our award-winning local partner Priestley Construction.

Successful completion of this course can lead to further study, apprenticeships or you may progress into employment.

A carpenter/joiner/builder has the potential to earn anywhere between £12K and £40K per year. Working in the construction industry could see you constructing and managing major buildings, structures and facilities.

Career opportunities are available through large construction contractors and smaller specialist employers in the public and private sectors. You could also train to become your own boss and become self-employed.
