  Overview

This introductory qualification is designed for learners who may be ready to progress quickly to further study. The Award offers a basic introduction to the a variety of careers in Public Services, for example, Police, Fire, Paramedics and Army. Also provides learners with the opportunity to develop generic, transferable and sector-specific skills related to the study entering the public services in order for them to progress to further learning.

Our experienced staff will deliver a variety of lectures, seminars, workshops and presentations alongside independent student research. You will develop skills such as teamwork and leadership and develop their practical skills and improve fitness.

  • A City & Guilds Employability and Personal Development Award
  • English and Maths
  • A Tutorial Programme
  • Work Experience

Successful completion of the Award allows for progression to the Certificate.


  Qualification Gained: Edexcel BTEC Introductory Award in Public Services

Learners will study three core Employability units and three sector specific units over the duration of the course.

Employability Units:

Keeping Safe

  • Crime and its Effects
  • Career Planning
  • Stress Management
  • Team Work
  • Safety in the Work Place
  • Careers Candidate Project
  • ICT Project
  • Interview Skills

Vocational Units:

  • Being Organised
  • Developing a Personal Progression Plan

Sector Units:

  • Finding out about the Public Services
  • Being Organised
  • Map Reading & Physical Preparation

 

You should have keen interest in The Public Services and achieved a minimum 2 GCSE at grade 2 or above.

English and/or Maths will be included in your timetable if you have not achieved a GCSE at grade 4 or above in these subjects when you start your course.

You will be assessed through a range of methods that include coursework, assignments and presentations.

30 hours of relevant experience of work are included in the course. We will be visiting such places as Fire stations, Riot training with the police and a week away with the Army trip. Residential and guest speakers are also used to help enrich your learning experience. Our students work in partnership with the National Citizens Service (NCS) programme which helps to develop key employment skills and behaviours needed for progression to work.

Successful completion of the Public Services course can help you embark on a career in a Public and Uniformed Services related area. You will will be able to progress to further learning, an apprenticeship or employment. You also have the option for progression to the Certificate.
