This programme is a short course, delivered as part of a longer programme of a longer HNC or can be completed as a standalone module. It is delivered through blended learning which means a combination of face to face and online delivery sessions.
This unit aims to provide you with a comprehensive
understanding of computer networking essentials, including operations,
protocols, standards, security considerations, and prototypes of various
networking technologies. You will examine a variety of hardware and
related software, learning to configure and install these to understand
networking systems.
The unit covers a broad spectrum of networking technologies
to impart fundamental knowledge of Local Area Networking (LAN), Wide Area Networking
(WAN), and their evolution into large-scale networks. Additionally, students
will explore IP data network protocols.
By the end of this unit, students will have acquired the
knowledge and skills necessary to install, operate, and troubleshoot small
networks, including the functioning of IP data networks, routers, switching
technologies, IP routing technologies, IP services, and basic troubleshooting.
Key Info
Here’s what you’ll cover:
Network Design and Configuration: Learn how to plan and build a network from the ground up, including how to set up devices, assign IP addresses, and ensure everything is connected securely and efficiently.
Network Protocols and Models: Get to grips with the rules and structures that keep networks running—like how devices communicate, how data is transferred, and the roles of different layers in the OSI and TCP/IP models.
Networking Hardware and Software: Explore the key components that make up a network, from routers and switches to firewalls and network management tools. You’ll learn how to install, configure, and troubleshoot both hardware and software. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to install and manage small networks, understand how data flows through them, and solve common networking problems—giving you valuable, job-ready IT skills.- Network design and configuration

The assessment will range between written assignments, group work, and individual and group presentations.
Each module is worth 15 credits. If you successfully complete one, two or three modules, you will receive a Certificate of Unit Credit (CoUC) upon completion of the individual units. If you finish 8 units, you will awarded a HNC. You can progress onto other units, and then onto a HNC or HND.
