This is the perfect opportunity for you to work towards a rewarding and challenging career at the McMillan School of Education, an established centre for teacher education set in a stimulating, diverse environment. The degree fulfils the minimum entitlement of the ITT: Core Content Framework for teacher training alongside an ambitious and innovative curriculum designed by Leeds Trinity University. Opportunities to develop clear links between theory and practice are evident through school-based training, intensive training and practice weeks and a series of visiting speakers to enhance your understanding of all aspects of primary school life and learning. At the heart of the degree is school experience, and we provide an extensive programme of school placements throughout the course, giving you the opportunity, to practise your teaching skills. We have strong partnership links with local schools throughout West Yorkshire and beyond. Your future career will be built on a solid foundation of the highest academic standards of teaching and learning, as our teaching staff are experts in their chosen field and outstanding practitioners. Initial Teacher Training (ITT) at Bradford College is delivered in partnership with Leeds Trinity University as the accredited provider. Find out more on our partnership page. This partnership will enable Bradford College to continue to deliver qualified teacher training qualifications in Bradford. The ITT partnership agreement is currently being finalised, as such, Bradford College will be open to provisional applications for the 2024-25 academic year via UCAS and will reserve the right to make any formal offers until the contract is formally in place.
Our Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) course is based on and goes beyond the Core Content Framework and progressively leads you to the standards required for recommendation of Qualified Teacher Status at the end of the programme. You will then begin your Early Career Teacher (ECT) phase in your first and second year of employment. Learning and teaching pedagogy runs throughout the course to ensure your professional development is based on a solid theoretical foundation and is built on as you move through each year of study. Course content covers subjects within the National Curriculum and all other relevant statutory frameworks and guidance to enable you to meet the requirements of the Teachers’ Standards and ensure you are a strong teaching candidate. We encourage you to take responsibility for your own personal and professional development and offer you high quality support from personal tutors. School-based training School experience is a vital part of your teacher training programme. A key strength of the course is how theory and practice are related by working with children in placement schools -with support provided by experienced mentors. School placements are compliant with DfE criteria and will be arranged for you within the Primary age range. Every effort is made to ensure that the most appropriate placements are chosen for each trainee to enhance their professional development. We have strong links with local schools, whose staff make a significant contribution to your training. Placement schools are situated in Bradford and the neighbouring areas to give a wide range of experience and to meet the needs of students from across the region.
Entry to this course requires GCSEs in English Language or Literature, Maths and a Science at grade 4 (C) or above. Please note that in accordance with DfE guidance, qualifications in key and functional skills at level 2 are not equivalent to GCSEs in terms of content and therefore do not meet the minimum entry requirements of the course. The entry tariff for this programme is 112-136 UCAS tariff points, a variety of level 3 qualifications are accepted. In addition to the academic entry requirements, applicants must also meet the additional entry requirements set by the DfE for selection. This includes a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) criminal records checks and a health check prior to commencement of the course. Applicants also need to demonstrate the commitment, attitudes and values appropriate to those of a primary teacher and the potential to train as a teacher. Strong applicants often have experience in primary schools, but this is not a requirement. Applicants who meet the entry criteria will be invited to interview. At the interview, a written assessment may be used to evaluate your strengths and needs. This course is not available to students on a Student Route Visa.
During each stage of your school-based training, you will be formatively assessed and your progress mapped against core competence statements. A summary judgment will be made at the end of each stage. This summary will provide you with further information about your areas of strength and targets to develop moving forwards. By the end of your training in school you will be expected to have met the Teachers’ Standards and a Summative Assessment will be made using the standards as a benchmark. When you meet the Teachers’ Standards, you are then recommended for QTS by Leeds Trinity University as our accredited ITT training provider.
Career and progression opportunities in the Primary sector are plentiful and rewarding. Completion of the BA (Hons) Primary Education: Later Years (5-11) with QTS will give you the relevant training and expertise so you can continue to build the skills and knowledge you need to feel confident and empowered in your classroom as an Early Career Teacher (ECT).
